Alcohol use suspected in fatal Iredell crash, Highway Patrol says

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WSIC) – The Highway Patrol suspects alcohol was a contributing factor in an Iredell crash Wednesday night that killed one person and injured two others.

Trooper J.S. Swagger says a vehicle operated by 22-year-old Harmony resident Samuel Pierce Vanhoy went off Chief Thomas Road to the right, over-corrected, lost control, and collided with a tree.  Vanhoy was pronounced dead on scene.  The two passengers were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment.  Their names and conditions were not immediately available.

The accident happened around 8:30 Wednesday night.  Chief Thomas Road is off Old Mocksville Road northeast of Statesville.

According to Swagger, none of the occupants of the 1989 Toyota pickup were restrained by seat belts.
