CORNELIUS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) – The Cornelius Town Manager amended his proposed budget to include a $2/hour pay increase for firefighters on Monday.

WSIC news partner FOX 46 reports this comes after the town balked at the fire department’s initial request for a $2/hour increase, instead, offering $1/hour.

“It’s insulting,” one Cornelius resident said at the town’s commissioner meeting before the change was made on Monday.

The Cornelius Fire Department is also requesting money for additional firefighters, but that was not mentioned in the most recent proposed budget.

The town did make room in the proposed budget for other needs, $90,000 for fire truck equipment and $35,000 for a vehicle.

All firefighters with Cornelius F.D. are volunteers. The budget could be approved as soon as Monday, June 4.
