Teen accused of making false shooting threat against West Iredell High School

PRESS RELEASE

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies received information of a plan of a possible threat of a school shooting happening at West Iredell High School on Monday August 12.

Deputies received this information while investigating another incident in the area of Iredell, and Alexander County Line. The information was received from a parent about a student having made a threat of a school shooting on Monday when the students return to school.

An investigation was immediately initiated into the possible threat by contacting school officials, and the School Resource Officer. Deputies located the suspect and spoke with the juvenile, and the parent.

An appointment was scheduled for the juvenile, and parent to meet with West Iredell High School officials and Detectives with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. During the investigation, Threat Assessment Detective J. Dyson along with School Resource Officers interviewed numerous students who had knowledge of the threat.

During the interviews it was discovered the suspect has been talking about this the prior week. The student had told others not to come to school on Monday.

Based on all the information gathered the juvenile was charged with Communicating a False Report of Mass Violence on Educational Property. All of the evidence obtained has been submitted to the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and the District Attorney’s Office. This student has a history of repeated incidents similar to this in the Iredell-Statesville School Systems.

Sheriff Campbell added, “It is always beneficial in these types of investigations when we are able to work closely with school administrators such as we did in this case with Mrs. Gaither, and her staff at West Iredell High School. We take a zero tolerance when it comes to violence or threatened acts of violence on our school system. We will not accept this kind of behavior, and will do all we can to protect our students, parents and school staff members”.
