For a second year in a row, eighth grade Mount Mourne student, Jessica Orr,has been knitting and collecting tiny red hats for a project through the American Heart Association in connection with the Children’s Heart Foundation called “Little Hats, Big Hearts” (https://www.heart.org/en/get-involved/little-hats-big-hearts).
These little red hats will be given out to babies born in February in local hospitals in order to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and to help their children do the same. The effort also raises awareness of congenital heart defects, and what we can all do to help prevent them.
Last year, she mailed off 137 little red hats that were donated through the generosity of teachers, parents and students at her school. This year, in addition to the Mount Mourne School community, she expanded her reach to all of the teachers in Iredell-Statesville Schools and a local church knitting group. She set her goal at 200 hats.
When all of the hats were counted and packed to send off to the local American Heart Association office in Morrisville, she had more than doubled her donation from last year with 284 tiny red hats in all!!
With so much interest in this project, Jessica hopes to start this undertaking earlier next school year. Her plans include inviting expert knitters and crocheters to lead a class or a club for interested students and teachers who want to learn to make hats for this worthy cause.
