PRESS RELEASE

Statesville, NC – Mitchell Community College friends, alumni, and supporters provided more than $600,000 in gifts, grants, and commitments over the fiscal year that ended on June 30. When combined with sustaining resources from its Foundation’s Endowment for Excellence, Mitchell benefitted from more than $1.3 million in philanthropic support.

Supporters’ gifts will fund institutional priorities including scholarships, program development, arts programs and experiential learning opportunities.

“These gifts support our students in extraordinary ways,” said Mitchell Community College President Dr. Tim Brewer. “Investing in Mitchell helps train the next generation of nurses and firefighters and paramedics. It prepares the next generation of college graduates to earn their education without massive debt. And it builds a workforce that supports our community’s greatest needs.”

Included in the overall total is the creation of six new scholarship funds, including the Officer Jordan H. Sheldon Memorial Scholarship. The endowed fund, created in memory of slain Mooresville Police Officer Jordan Sheldon, will benefit a cadet enrolled in the college’s Basic Law Enforcement Training program.

The college also celebrated more than $32,000 contributed to its new Maverick Fund, which this year was used to fund emergency aid for students among other needs.

“Our donors have quite literally helped answer some of our students’ prayers through their gifts,” noted James D. Hogan, the college’s Vice President for Advancement. “We are deeply grateful to each of them for their support.”
