UPDATE: July 13, 2017 As a result of a lengthy, exhaustive, and extensive investigation, Today, SPD Investigators have obtained warrants on a suspect in the fatal hit and run which took place on July 4th, 2016, that took the life of Reynaldo Carbajal Hernandez, 43, of Statesville.
The suspect, Kerry Zockime Ravenell Jr. B/M, 26, of Statesville NC is being charged with: Felony death by vehicle, DWI, DWLR, Felony hit & run with serious injury/death.
Ravenell is currently serving a prison term in the NC Dept. of Corrections on unrelated charges.
The charges filed today come as a result of lab examinations that were recently received, in addition to other evidence Investigators have gathered during the course of this investigation.
Death/Homicide investigations, including traffic fatalities such as this, are complex cases which sometimes take a more significant amount of time to investigate and collect the needed evidence than in many other cases. This however ensures that Investigators are presenting the best case possible for prosecution.
SPD Investigators never gave up, and continued to press forward, conducting interviews and examining evidence in this case. These charges today are the result of their determination to solve this case, and hope to provide a measure of closure and justice for the family of Mr. Hernandez.
ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE
Statesville NC: On Monday, July 4th, at about 5:45 AM, Officers responded to a report of a vehicle crash at the intersection of Garner Bagnal and Buffalo Shoals Rd. Upon arrival, Officers found a Blue in color Chevrolet Cavalier off of the roadway against the utility pole guide wires at the southwest corner of Garner Bagnal Blvd. and Buffalo Shoals Rd. The driver was still in the vehicle and EMS was called to the scene. A short time after EMS arrived on scene, they pronounced the driver of the Chevrolet Cavalier dead. The deceased has been identified as Reynaldo Carbajal Hernandez, age 43, of Statesville. The second vehicle involved was a 2016 Toyota 4 door passenger car with a Maryland tag. It was off the right side of the roadway further South on Buffalo Shoals Rd. It was discovered this was a rental vehicle through Enterprise Rental Car. The driver of this vehicle fled the scene on foot.
Traffic Investigators along with Criminal Investigators responded to the scene. It was determined the Blue Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling West on Garner Bagnal Blvd and the Gray Toyota was traveling South on Buffalo Shoals Rd. The two collided in the intersection with the Gray Toyota striking the Blue Chevrolet in the passenger side at a high rate of speed. This incident is still under investigation.
