Boy Scout Troop 609 of Statesville received top honors while attending summer camp at Camp Raven Knob near Mount Airy N.C. The troop earned the Honor Troop designation while at summer camp. The Honor Troop award recognizes scouting units that participate fully in the camp program, follow camp rules and demonstrate the true spirit of Scouting. In addition, Elijah Tang was named the troop’s Honor Camper for the week and recognized during the closing campfire program.
Raven Knob Scout Reservation is a 3200 acre Boy Scout camp operated by the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America located in Surry County. The camp host approximately 5000 scouts annually and troops from as far away as Texas attend summer camp at Camp Raven Knob. Troop 609 had 18 scouts in attendance at Camp Raven Knob and was joined by troops from 16 Boy Scout Councils representing North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Florida and the District of Columbia. In addition, a scout troop from Canada camped at Raven Knob while touring the Eastern United States on their way to Florida during Troop 609’s stay.
In addition to earning merit badges and participating in scouting programs, several first year scouts participated in the Raven Scout Program. Scouts in the Raven Scout Program learned the basic skills that Scouts must master to become proficient in camping and outdoor activities. Further, Life Scout Andrew Setzer earned the BSA Life Guard certification during the week.
