Lincolnton, NC – Following an almost two month long investigation a Catawba County woman has been charged with embezzlement from the business where she worked as a bookkeeper for six years.
Donna Marie Varin, 50, of 2540 Pinacle Drive, Catawba, NC was charged with one felony count of Embezzlement in Excess of $100,000.
Detective Richard Calhoun began the investigation on December 22, 2014 after the medical office of North State Medical Group at 2266 N NC 16 Hwy, Denver reported that an employee had been embezzling money from the practice between 2007 and 2011.
Records indicated that the cash receipts received would be turned over to Ms. Varin who would complete a bank deposit for a drastically smaller amount than the money taken in. The records show that approximately $128,000 was shown to have been embezzled from the cash deposits and an additional $20,000 by falsifying payroll deductions regarding health insurance and supplemental insurance. The total amount of over $148,000 was embezzled between August 3, 2007 and December 27, 2011.
Varin, who confessed to taking the money, was arrested on February 5, 2015 and processed in at the Lincoln County Detention Center. She was then released on a $30,000 secured bond.
