Sheriff’s Office: Two charged after couple found passed out in vehicle with child

PRESS RELEASE

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated on August 7th, 2017 the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a larceny of US Currency and jewelry with a value of $5, 550.00. Items stolen from the house included a coin collection along with several rings and $210.00. The victims were able to provide possible suspects to Deputies. Melissa Marie Smyle had been in the home just prior to the items being stolen.

Detective Daniel Stikeleather began an investigation and was able to recover some of the stolen property from the home of Melissa Marie Smyle. During the course of the investigation it was learned that Smyle and Hairyes are in a dating relationship. Stikeleather was able to locate three rings that were sold to a pawn shop in Troutman, NC by Cody Lynn Hairyes. All the items recovered were returned to the owner with a value of $2,200.00.

Warrants were obtained on Melissa Marie Smyle for felony larceny and on Cody Lynn Hairyes for obtaining property by false pretense. Smyle and Hairyes were located by the Statesville Police Department passed out in a vehicle in a parking lot on Shelton Avenue. A small child was also in the vehicle at the time of the arrest. Statesville Police charged Smyle with possession of heroin, misdemeanor child abuse, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hairyes was charged with possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse. Smyle was placed under a $25,000.00 secured bond for the felony larceny and an additional $25,000.00 secured bond for possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, and misdemeanor child abuse. Hairyes was placed under a secured $9,999.00 secured bond for the obtaining property by false pretense warrant and an additional $9,999.00 secured bond for possession of heroin and misdemeanor child abuse.

The investigation is ongoing and the Department of Social Services was contacted and is also involved in this matter.
