Panthers re-sign RB Fozzy Whittaker



The Carolina Panthers have re-signed running back Fozzy Whittaker to a two-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.

Whittaker, a potential unrestricted free agent, played in all 16 games for Carolina in 2016. He rushed for 265 yards on 57 attempts, leading Carolina running backs with an average of 4.6 yards per carry. He also posted 226 receiving yards on 25 receptions and 275 yards on 12 kickoff returns. In Week Two versus San Francisco (9/18/16), Whittaker rushed for a career-high 100 yards on 16 carries as part of a trio that gave Carolina its first game in franchise history with a 100-yard rusher (Whittaker – 100), two 100-yard receivers (Greg Olsen – 122, Kelvin Benjamin – 108) and a 300-yeard passer (Cam Newton – 353).

Whittaker, who made his NFL debut on Arizona’s practice squad in 2012 spent time with San Diego and Cleveland in 2013 before joining the Panthers in 2014. He has played in 55 career regular season games with four starts. He has rushed for 597 yards on 142 carries with two touchdowns and has totaled 505 receiving yards on 63 catches with three touchdowns. He has averaged 22.7 yards on 61 kickoff returns for 1,384 yards.
