Deputies: Two Charlotte men facing drug charges following vehicle chase

PRESS RELEASE

Lincolnton, NC – Two Charlotte residents were arrested this weekend on drug related and traffic charges following a car chase in Lincoln County early Saturday morning.

Deputy R.D. Richard and Deputy J. Burns were parked near the intersection of Highway 150 East and Lee Lawing Road around 2:50 a.m. on September 8, 2018 when they observed a passing vehicle with blue lights visible from underneath the car.

Deputy Richard pulled out to stop the vehicle but in sped away at a high rate of speed. The deputy was attempting to catch up to the vehicle when he saw a red backpack thrown out the window of the car. The suspect vehicle traveled over several back roads before the officer lost sight of it. The backpack was recovered on Mountain View Church Road.

The description of the vehicle was given out and Deputy J. Allen and C. Palen stopped the car after the driver pulled into a residential driveway near the Highway 150 and Highway 16 intersection. Inside the vehicle with a Florida license plate were Carenthius Donta Payne, 33, and Eric James Wilson, 31, both of Charlotte, NC. The suspects were taken into custody and placed in Deputy M. Hollar’s patrol car.

A search of the backpack turned up cocaine, plastic baggies of marijuana drug paraphernalia and an assortment of prescription pills. Officers also recovered a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic 9 mm handgun.

Payne was charged with one felony count of possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also charged with several misdemeanor counts of possession of controlled substances. Payne was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.

Wilson was charged with speeding to elude arrest and released after posting a $5,000 secured bon. Both men are scheduled to appear in Lincoln County District Court on September 10, 2018.

Other charges may be pending as the investigation continues.
