Chase ends in Statesville wreck

Carl Cathey is accused by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office of leading a deputy on a chase while intoxicated Tuesday morning.

A West Iredell man is accused of leading a Sheriff’s Deputy on a chase while intoxicated Tuesday morning.

The chase ended with a wreck at the Highway 115 exit off I-40 in Statesville.

Major Marty Byers with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says Carl Anthony Cathey has been charged with driving while impaired, two stop light violations, driving while license revoked, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, careless and reckless driving, and failure to stop for a blue light and siren.

Cathey is accused of running red lights on Highway 90 where a deputy attempted a traffic stop. The pursuit continued onto I-40 and ended at the bottom of the eastbound exit ramp for Highway 115. A Highway Patrolman on scene indicated the vehicle struck the back of a pick-up truck and a telephone pole.

Byers says Cathey’s alcohol level was .11 when checked.

Cathey has a long list of criminal accusations, a number of which have been dismissed by the District Attorney.  He was found guilty of DWI in 2012.  Before that, Cathey received a prayer for judgment in 2009 on a charge of being intoxicated and disruptive.

A person from the pick-up was taken to the hospital after complaining of back pain.
