Felon accused of safecracking, stealing firearm

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Thursday May 24, 2018, a report was filed with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office in reference to firearms having been stolen. The victim reported the firearms had been taken from a locked safe inside a residence.

Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Detectives were assigned to investigate the matter. During the course of the investigation, the victim contacted investigators and advised another gun had been taken from his locked safe as well as two chainsaws and a JVC Speaker box. The items stolen had a dollar value of more than $4,000.00.

Detectives interviewed several witnesses and followed up on additional leads. Charles David Settle was interviewed by detectives on two different occasions, and as a result of statements gathered and additional evidence gathered, Settle was charged with Felony Safecracking, Felony Larceny of Firearm, Felony Larceny, Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, and Felony Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon.

Settle provided information which led investigators to the recovery of some of the stolen property. Investigators were able to recover four of the stolen firearms, two chainsaws, a trailer hitch, and a JVC Speaker Box totaling more than $2,700.00.

Settle was initially arrested on Tuesday May 29, 2018 and taken before Magistrate T. Thompson, who issued Settle a 100,000.00 dollars secure bond. On Thursday May 31, 2018, detectives obtained warrants for additional counts of Safecracking, Felony Larceny, Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Settle was issued and additional 75,000.00 dollars secured bond by Magistrate S. Watkins. The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be forthcoming.
