FROM PRESS RELEASE

Statesville City Council will meet Monday night, August 6, at 7 p.m. for its regular meeting.  This is not a public comment meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Council will meet at 5 p.m. for a closed session in the second floor conference of City hall.  The pre-agenda meeting will follow at 6 p.m. in the same room.

Finance Director Ralph Staley will update Council on the newly established policy to charge a convenience fee to customers who use a credit card to make payments to the City.  This policy was approved during the recent budget process as a way to increase revenue.  The $2.75 fee is per transaction and will only be applicable to customers paying their utility bill online or through the pay-by-phone system.

Lynn Miller, Interim Recreation and Parks Director, will ask Council to allow the Community Appearance Commission to raise money for the purchase of a sculpture currently on loan and displayed in the Statesville Sculpture Garden.  The piece, entitled “Williamston”, is made of metal to depict a horse and is being sold by the artist for $8,000.  If the campaign is successful, the sculpture will be moved to the corner of W. Broad and Meeting Streets for a permanent home.

The approval to purchase several pieces of equipment is on the agenda: A bucket truck and digger derrick truck for Electric Utilities and an automated garbage collection truck and backhoe for Public Works.

City Manager Ron Smith is expected to present Council with an overview of the hiring process for the next Police Chief.  Chief Joe Barone’s last day is Sept 7.  Smith is proposing that the City hire an executive search firm to assist with the recruitment, interviewing and hiring process and is expected to name an interim chief by August 13, 2018.

City Council will meet in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 227 S. Center St.  The meeting is open to the public.
