Statesville, NC – Mitchell Community College president Dr. Tim Brewer has announced the creation of an endowed scholarship fund to be named in memory of former college president Dr. Doug Eason. Eason, who passed away in July, was president of Mitchell for two decades.

“Dr. Eason always made it clear that the College’s purpose was to serve students,” said Dr. Tim Brewer. “This was accomplished through his directing and leading the College but, more importantly, through his modeling of this belief every day. This scholarship will honor his commitment and belief long into the future and will serve many, many students.”

The scholarship was announced at a dinner for current and former trustees, city and county leaders, and members of the college administration. Dr. Eason’s widow, Dr. Laurel Eason, was on hand for the announcement. United Way of Iredell County board chair Dr. Melanie Taylor presented the organization’s gift to the college.

The college received dozens of memorial gifts following Eason’s passing, but the lead gift to help create the endowed scholarship came in the form of a $10,000 contribution from the United Way of Iredell County. The gift comes from the United Way’s endowment.

“United Way fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in Iredell County, and our partnership with Mitchell Community College is extraordinarily important to the success of this effort,” noted Brett Eckerman, executive director for the United Way of Iredell County. “We are pleased that our new United Way Endowment for the Future allows us this opportunity to honor the life and work of a man who was so important to both of our institutions, Dr. Douglas Eason, and we look forward to seeing how Mitchell Community College will use these funds to enhance student success today and into the future.”

The college is still accepting gifts to the scholarship endowment, which will be awarded in the next academic year. Contributions can be made online at or mailed to the Mitchell Community College Office for Advancement at 500 W. Broad St., Statesville, with a memo for the Eason Endowed Scholarship.
