Two pounds of marijuana seized after officer spots bag in open motel room

PRESS RELEASE

STATESVILLE, NC: On Wednesday, August 8, 2018, officers with the SPD Crime Reduction Team (CRT) were conducting a foot patrol at the Hallmark Inn located at 2579 Davie Avenue.  During the patrol, officers made contact with a female subject in the open doorway of a room and observed a male subject in the room, as well as a bag of marijuana in plain view.

The female subject was identified as Kayla Smarowsky and was taken into custody for an outstanding order for arrest.  The male subject, Johnathan Rife, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and was also taken into custody.  Due to the narcotics observed, a search warrant was obtained for the room and executed around 9:30pm.

CRT located approximately 1,043 grams (or about 2.3 pounds) of marijuana, 18 vials of THC oil, several dosage units of suboxone and diazepam, 4.7 grams of MDMA and other various items associated with the sale and use of narcotics.

Johnathon Blake Rife, 27 W/M Hunters Hill Rd Statesville, was served with the outstanding warrant and also received additional charges for PWISD Marijuana, PWISD MDMA, Felony Possession of Marijuana, Felony Maintaining a Dwelling, Simple Possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance, Simple Possession of a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Rife was given a $15,000 secured bond for the new charges.

Kayla Edith Smarowsky, 29 W/F Wilkesboro Hwy, was served with the outstanding order for arrest and received no additional charges associated with the executed search warrant.
