Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a man brandishing a knife following a domestic dispute at a Null Road home in northern Lincoln County.

Officers were dispatched to the scene around 8:00 p.m. on November 28, 2017 in connection with a physical disturbance involving a knife. The Lincoln County Communications Center advised deputies that the man had threatened people at the residence with a knife before running into a wooded area nearby. A female at the home identified the suspect as Tony Devon Boyles,33, of 1261 Null Road, Lincolnton, NC.

Deputies went to the back of the house in an attempt to locate Boyles who had threatened to harm himself with the knives. Officers located Boyles near an abandoned house next door and gave him clear verbal commands to drop the knife. Boyles refused and continued to approach the officers with the knife when Sgt. S. Grinnell fired a non-lethal bean bag striking the suspect in the left thigh.
Boyles fell to the ground and officers removed two knives from him. The suspect had lacerations on his hand and Lincoln County EMS was dispatched to treat the injury. Boyles was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, injury to personal property, resist, delay and obstruct a public officer and two counts of assault on a female. Deputies transported Boyles to CHS-Lincoln for evaluation.

On June 20, 2017 deputies were dispatched to the same residence where Boyles was standing outside his vehicle holding a gas can above his head and acting as though he was going to light himself on fire. He got back into his vehicle and poured gas over himself and the vehicle. Deputies tried to convince Boyles to give himself up. He continued the standoff until Sheriff David Carpenter arrived on the scene. Sheriff Carpenter convinced Boyles to throw the gas can and lighter out of the car. He then exited the vehicle and agreed to go with Lincoln County EMS to be treated.

Warrants will be served on Boyles after an evaluation has been completed.
