It has been one year since Hugh Moose was murdered in his home. Detectives and Deputies have spent countless hours interviewing witnesses and suspects, and following hundreds of leads. The family of Hugh Moose is offering a reward of $30,000.00 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for his murder. The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the following information to the public, hoping to yield any new information into the investigation.

On January 10th, 2017 around 7:00pm Hugh Lee Moose was shot and killed in his home at 577 Shiloh Road in Statesville. One person was observed in the area before the homicide.  This person was seen walking away from the area of the victim’s home within minutes of when of the first 911 call was placed.

The unidentified person is described as a white male, 25 to 35 years old, around 5 feet 10 inches tall, with light brown or sandy blonde hair. He was wearing light-colored Carhartt-style overalls or coveralls and carrying a dark backpack. The occurrence of the man walking is noteworthy, as it was cold outside and there was snow on the ground from a snowstorm the day prior.

Multiple witnesses say they saw the man in the area as early as 5pm on the day of the homicide. Additionally, he was seen minutes before the body of Hugh Moose was discovered shortly after 7pm. The subject was seen speaking with Mr. Moose near the carport door about an hour before his body was discovered. It is unknown if Mr. Moose knew the subject or if he simply walked to Mr. Moose’s door.

Based on eyewitness statements, Detectives know the subject left the home of Hugh Moose and went to another residence in the area and asked to use the telephone. The subject attempted to call someone for a ride, and said that he had been walking from the area of East Broad St and was trying to get to Old Mountain road. The man’s story may or may not have been true. The same man was seen later, around the time of the 911 call, in front of the home of Mr. Moose.

In addition, family and friends of Mr. Moose report seeing him in the company of a white female, approximately 25 years old, with dark hair and a medium build. She was seen with him in the months prior to his death, however, no one knows her identity. The only information provided is that Mr. Moose told family members he had trouble understanding her based on her accent. Moreover, Mr. Moose told witnesses he had given the female a ride to an apartment complex around the Raleigh/Durham area where she picked up a bag containing needles. Based on this information, it is possible the female may be using intravenous drugs and has connections to an apartment complex in the Raleigh/Durham area.

Detectives also are trying to identify the owner of a vehicle seen parked at the bridge on Shiloh Road around 4:30pm on the day of the homicide. The vehicle is described as a full size SUV possibly a Lincoln Navigator or similar type vehicle. It is unclear if the vehicle or the unidentified female are connected to the homicide, Detectives need to find the owner/operator of the vehicle, and identify the female as part of the ongoing investigation.

With the assistance of a forensic artist and an eyewitness, a sketch has been created. This is only a sketch and not necessarily an exact picture of the suspect or his appearance on January 10th, 2017. The subject is a White Male with medium skin tone, even though the sketch may resemble a darker complexion.

This sketch is a depiction of the man described walking in the area of Shiloh Road January 10, 2017 wearing Carhartt type clothing. Detectives believe someone has information and may not realize the importance. It could be anything from a friend calling asking for a ride from the area to seeing someone you know walking that day who meets the description. Likewise, if anyone saw anything such as a suspicious car parked in the area, Detectives want to hear from you.

Anyone who knows the identity of the man, or has any information regarding the person responsible for this crime, is asked to call the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Hotline at (704) 928-9804. Callers may remain anonymous, so please report any information, even if it seems insignificant.
