Investigators ID man killed at Huntersville hospital, thought to be Irma evacuee

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI) has issued the below press release regarding this incident.

“On Sunday, September 10, 2017, at approximately 11:40 p.m., Huntersville Police Department authorities responded to Novant Health Medical Center in Huntersville, North Carolina regarding an active shooter.  Huntersville Police Officers Michael Joseph W/M and Travis Watts W/M encountered a male subject identified as Joseph Charles Cook W/M/ DOB: 5/1/1941, inside of the hospital.  Mr. Cook sustained fatal injuries as a result of this encounter with law enforcement. Preliminary information gathered indicated Mr. Cook was travelling from Deland Florida to New York due to hurricane Irma. Huntersville Police Chief Cleveland Spruill contacted the SBI and requested a criminal investigation regarding this incident. SBI Agents are still gathering details from witnesses and ask for anyone with information to please contact our office at 980-781-3000”.

The NC SBI is conducting the investigation into the officer involved shooting. All questions regarding the investigation should be directed to their agency.

Original Press Release

On September 10, 2017 at approximately 11:40 PM, officers with the Huntersville Police Department responded to Presbyterian Hospital at 10030 Gilead Road in Huntersville in reference to a man with a gun who had fired several shots. Upon arrival, hospital staff and witnesses directed officers to the area where the man with the gun was last seen. During a search of the area, officers encountered the man still armed with the gun. An encounter ensued, during which, the officers, felt threatened by the man’s actions and fired several rounds striking him. The man involved was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. During this incident no further injuries occurred to officers, patients or hospital staff.

In accordance with established procedures, the Huntersville Police Department has requested that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations conduct the investigation into the officer involved shooting. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the preliminary investigation.
