Sherriff Darren Campbell stated: On Wednesday October 3, 2018, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a female stating someone had shot a gun at her and was following her in another vehicle.

The victim described the suspect and the vehicle the suspect was in. She advised the 911 Operator, the suspect was hanging out the window of his vehicle pointing the firearm at her vehicle while she was driving on Eastway Drive turning onto East Broad Street.

Deputies and detectives, along with units from the Statesville Police Department, responded to the area. The suspect and victim were spotted at the intersection of East Broad Street and Brierwood Road.

The female victim and her three year old child stopped when she saw law enforcement and they were taken safety while additional officers attempted to stop the suspect in his vehicle. The suspect refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit started.

The suspect, later identified as Tyrell Montice Tate, turned back onto East Broad Street and continued through congested downtown Statesville before crashing into a retaining wall in front of Mitchell Community College. Deputies took the suspect into custody. While clearing the vehicle to determine if any other people were inside, a 9mm handgun was located along with a small amount of cocaine.

A data base search of the handgun indicated the gun was stolen out of Mooresville. Detectives processed the accident scene, went back and searched the streets traveled looking for additional evidence. Numerous potential witnesses were identified and interviewed.

After interviewing the victim, detectives learned the original incident occurred at 1102 King Street, where Tate fired a handgun, assaulted, and kidnapped the victim before she was able to get away. The victim told detectives Tate shot at her when she and she and her daughter fled the scene.

As a result of this investigation, Tyrell Montice Tate was charged with the following crimes; Felony Second Degree Kidnapping, Misdemeanor Assault on a Female, Felony Assault by Strangulation, Misdemeanor Assault by Pointing a Gun, Misdemeanor Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Felony Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Felony Possession of Cocaine, Felony Possession of Stolen Firearm, Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor Assault on a Child Under 12 Years Old, Misdemeanor Communicating Threats. Tate was taken before Magistrate D. Chambers and was given a 300,000.00 dollar secured bond.

A criminal records check of Tate showed there were outstanding warrants for two counts Felony Probation violation. Additional charges are expected from Statesville Police Department in connection with Felony Fleeing to elude.
