CORNELIUS (WSIC) I-77 toll lanes are here to stay – at least for now.

The NCDOT said in a meeting Wednesday a state law which scores projects for funding means a contract buyout is not currently an option.

Transportation Secretary Jim Trogdon. Several members of the committee questioned the scoring process, saying this is an extraordinary situation that needs a work-around. There was no final decision announced.

Options still being considered include hardening the shoulder between exits 23 and 35 for use during peek hours, adding three general purpose lanes between 23 and 36 and widening the interstate over the Lake Norman causeway among others.

The NCDOT says it will prepare a report for the state legislature on short term changes to the project by year’s end when construction is also expected to be complete.
